Focus India: the downturn in natural stone exports continues

18 April 2026

Again in 2024 (the last final data available), India was in 4th place – behind China, Italy and Turkey – among the biggest exporters of natural stones, with foreign sales worth $US 1.7 billion and a 10.1% share of the world total.

These figures can be seen in a country focus prepared by the CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE Studies Center, which also shows, however, that in the past decade India’s overall stone exports have lessened in value by 16%. The study also reveals that, while the weight of finished and semi-finished stone products rose from 55% in 2014 to 68% in 2024, the average price of exported materials still remains very low: $US 164.20/ton generally and $US 22.90 per square meter for finished goods.

As regards 2025, predictions indicate – for the fourth consecutive year – a further downturn in exports of Indian stone products (-14% from 2024), that should decline to about $US 1.45 billion. Last year, too, the main destination markets for Indian natural stones were China (with imports worth just over $US 300 million, – 6.2%) and the United States (some 250 million, down 31.4%), followed by Vietnam (141 million, – 4.3%) and the United Kingdom (108 million, -14.3%).

As for trade with Italy, the CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE Studies Center states that last year Italy’s exports of raw stone materials to India – the second buyer after China – rose by 17.9% from 2024, to worth of nearly $US 60 million. And more than doubled were Indian imports of stone-working technologies Made in Italy (+103.3%), which rose to worth of $US 41.6 million.
