PNA: the first EPD for the Natural Stone sector presented

18 November 2025

MARMO+MAC 2025 (Verona, September 23-26) was the stage for a preview presentation of the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) for the Natural Stone sector created by PNA | Pietra Naturale Autentica (Authentically Natural Stone), the network of companies created to promote and protect natural stone products that unites more than 40 of the most representative companies, boards and organizations in the sector, including CONFINDUSTRIA MARMOMACCHINE and Marmomacchine Servizi. Engineer Claudia Chiappino, PNA Sustainability Project Manager, described the contents, procedures and results of this important work to a well-attended audience of sector businesspeople and operators.

This is the first sector study that certifies the environmental impact of natural stones processed in Italy, considering the product’s entire life cycle, whatever the geographical provenance of the raw material. We remind readers that an EPD is a certification with data verified according to international standards (ISO 14025 and EN 15804) and validated by independent boards, which clearly and transparently describes the environmental impact of a product during its whole life cycle.

The first EPD for the natural stone sector is unique in regarding not a single product or company but an entire sector, certifying that the Italian natural stone industry has very low environmental impact especially in regard to CO2 emissions, from the quarry to the end of the product’s life.
